Isha Foundation to clean Mahabs
World famous for its shore temples,
Mamallapuram has now been world heritage listed and efforts are being made to preserve what is left. The natural environment with its numerous living and non-living resources is man's most precious heritage. But unfortunately
Mamallapuram does not sport the cleanest of
beaches and swimming in it would probably cause a real stir among the locals. Plastic waste and litter on the beach is a menace to the environment in this otherwise beautiful place.
The Vanashree Eco Center is an initiative of the volunteers at Isha Foundation, a non-profit charitable trust based at Coimbatore. Its purpose is to protect and preserve the ecology and to educate people about conservation and ecology through experiential programs.
The volunteers of Isha foundation at Chennai will be mirroring this initiative at Chennai on September 4th 2004. Supported by the strength of over 150 volunteers, Isha foundation proposes to clean up the beach and also sensitise the local traders and bodies on the hazards of plastic and the importance of preserving this heritage. The purpose is to enable them integrate the environmental considerations in their development activities and also incorporate environmental concerns in their day-to-day life.
Isha has done commendable action for rural rejuvenation at Gobichettipalayam covering over 400 villages and set up environmental Centers to support mass initiatives in care and protection of the environment.
The Isha Foundation is an international public service organisation dedicated to self-realisation. Isha Foundation commenced its Social Outreach Programmes in 1997, working with tribal people and villagers. Over 200,000 Isha volunteers work to improve quality of life for the impoverished of body, mind or spirit through social outreach programmes. Isha Foundation’s service activities among tribes and villages continue to expand in ever-widening circles to enrich its symbiosis with the community of all people everywhere.
