Boaz School 40th anniversary
The Dr G D Boaz Memorial Hospital School celebrated its 40th anniversary at its campus in Santhosapuram, Chennai, recently. This is the first institution of its kind in India that is licensed by the Tamil Nadu government.
Special Commissioner for the Disabled, Mohan Verghese Chunkath, presided and released a souvenir.
Dr Sarada Menon, who was the guest of honour, was presented a citation by Dr Jayanthini, psychiatrist, in recognition of her service and commitment to the cause of psycho-social rehabilitation.
Dr Sarada appreciated the achievements of the centre over the last 40 years and suggested that the emphasis should now be on academic training programmes for those who wish to qualify in this area of work.
Dr Jim Crowe from New Zealand, former president of the World Fellowship for Schizophrenia, emphasised the role of the family in mental rehailitation and its potential role as an agent of change regarding good access to care, approipriate medication and information on the illness.
"Look at the person and not the illness," he said, The centre was like a family home, he felt.
P D Boaz, in his welcome address, said Dr G D Boaz was a dintinguished professor in the field of psychology, and that it was on his initiative that in 1943 the Madras University founded the Department of Psychology. He was involved with several social welfare activities and was the co-founder of the Juvenile Guidance Bureau. He touched the lives of several people in varied walks of life through his column 'Know Your Mind' in 'The Hindu', P D Boaz recalled.
Prof Jayachandran, the master of ceremonies, made the introductions. Dr C Ramasubramaniam, psychiatrist of the Chellamuthu Trust, spoke.
