The annual blood donation camp was held in MOP Vaishnav College for Women recently. This is the 10th year that the college is conducting the camp. The camp was organised by the MOP NSS unit, VRC, General Hospital and Canara Bank. Dr Anuradha, Prof of Tamil and NSS co-ord, was the main in-charge of the camp.
About 500 girls came forward to donate blood and about 350 units of blood was collected. The girls were checked up by the doctors before they donated and only the ones fit enough to donate were allowed to give blood. After donation the girls were given fruit juice, a packet of biscuit each, cakes and bananas to get back their strength. They were also given a certificate, donor’s card and a
keychain.
It is a humane act to give blood. In Tamil Nadu alone, 4 lakh units of blood is required per year. Blood cannot be manufactured in factories nor can animal blood be used for humans. Blood donation is totally painless except for a pinprick for few seconds.. Tt saves a person in pain without any pain to you.
Out of the normal quantity of about 5-6 litres of of blood that circulates in the body only 350 ml is donated which is one-eighth of the extra blood in our body. the donated blood is recuperated in the body within 48 hours of donation. Blood donation does not lead to loss of strengh or health.
It is an act of voluntary service and there is no place for monetary consideration.Voluntary blood donor’s blood alone is saved in the blood banks in order to give pure and healthy blood to those who need it. Only disposable blood bags and needles are used to prevent AIDS and various infections.
To donate blood you should be between the age group of 18-60. You should not weigh less
than 45 kg. Blood donation can be done only once in three months. Women donors should not donate during their periods. You should not be amemic or be under antibiotics or medication. You should not suffer from high blood pressure or low blood pressure.
Be a donor. You just spend a few minutes giving blood but a dying person gets a whole lifetime.
