Arthritis expo

More than 150 million people in India suffer from arthritis. About 10 million among this suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, poined out Prof P V A Mohandas, chairman of the hospital.

Arthritis is a degenerative disease that attacks people in their prime (ages 22 - 45) and cripples them. MIOT has done pioneering work in this field.

MIOT was the first in the Asia-Pacific region to introduce techniques like minimally invasive computer navigated joint replacement surgery, and implants like high flexion knees, which restore full movement.

Several new drugs have been introduced for improved medical management of the disease.

Dr.MohandasMohandas said MIOT has had excellent results with patients in advanced stages recovering full mobility after treatment. Yet, thousands of people with arthritis in Chennai and their caregivers are suffering without awareness of how this new technology can work miracles for their condition. MIOT's mission in conducting the exposition is to create an awareness, to bring modern medical management and technology within the reach of these people. Techniques introduced in the leading centres of the world are now being brought by MIOT to the common man in Chennai.

Dr.Barry D'RosarioThe exposition, which offered free entry to all, was conducted at MIOT Hospitals on Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. The exposition covered Medical Management of Arthritis, Complications of Drug Therapy, Surgical Solutions, Pain Free Joint Replacements, Minimally Invasive Computer Navigated Surgery, High Flex Knees, Spinal Disorders and Role of Physiotherapy.

This is the first time a hospital in India is organising an awareness initiative on arthritis on this scale, said Dr Barry D'Rosario.
