Seminar on breast cancer

The Agarwal Mahila Mandal and ABC Foundation are jointly working on a noble project which aims to raise the awareness of breast cancer, and abolish the prevalent ignorance of the dreaded disease among women in Chennai, both among the well-off and underprivileged sections. An event has been organised in Chennai on October 13, to promote this cause, said Rekha Agarwal, project coordinator and founder.

"The aim is to save as many lives as possible. Therefore, we are organising breast cancer detection camps, with the support of eminent hospitals and diagnostic centres in the city, particularly the Apollo Cancer Institute," she said.

The aim of the seminar is to not only educate the women on the symptoms of the disease, methods of detection and medical procedures, but also provide them the much-needed subsidy and financial backing. Hence, all those interested in going through the screening tests can attend the seminar and avail of a two-third subsidy in the cost of the tests. Normally, the tests at Apollo would cost Rs 3,000. However, for those registering at the seminar, the cost would be just Rs 1,000 - that is, only one-third, Rekha Agarwal said, adding that even this amount of Rs 1,000 may be too high for the poor and needy sections and, therefore, this amount would be provided by the Mandal for them.

Those attending the seminar at Hotel Savera beginning 10 a.m. would have to pay a registration fee of Rs 300 per head, which would also entail them to lunch there.

Prizes have been announced for the event 'Tambola with a Twist'. The event also showcases a Deepavali bazaar, with an awareness talk by established oncologist, Dr Renu Rao of Apollo Speciality Cancer Institute. This event is billed as a fund-raiser for the project, said Rekha Agarwal.
