Lifeline Multi-specialty Hospital inaugurated
Union Health minister Anbumani Ramadoss inaugurated the Lifeline Group's latest initiative - the Rs 40 crore, Lifeline Multi-speciality Hospital, Perungudi, along the IT corridor in Chennai, at a function recently. Lifeline will be the only hospital of its kind along the IT belt - a one-stop hospital, serving the needs of people in the south Chennai region and also covering
ECR.
Lifeline will offer expert medical care and consultation with over 50 specialists and super specialists in various disciplines headed by Dr J S Rajkumar, chairman of Lifeline Group of Hospitals.
Apart from keyhole surgery (the complete spectrum) Lifeline will also provide a comprehensive laser and laparoscopy unit (a minimally invasive surgery unit), endoscopy /laser/ stapling procedure for piles, surgery for severe obesity, liver failure unit, besides facilities for dialysis and renal transplant and a complete cardiology unit addressing the needs of cardiac and cardio-thoracic surgery and angioplasty.
Dedicated to serving the economically weaker sections of society, Lifeline will offer a number of free beds for such patients. The hospital will also have a 24-hour emergency unit to deal with trauma care 24 x 7 x 52 x 365 days, Dr Rajkumar said.
The hospital will have a well-equipped neonatal and paediatric intensive care unit along with a maternity unit offering painless delivery and LDRP. A comprehensive feto-maternal unit will be a boon to the residents of south Chennai. This department will be headed by Dr Selva M. Annamalai, MD, DCh, MCP (UK), Neonatal and Paediatric Intensivist, trained in Australia and England, Dr Rajkumar said.
All the operation theatres in Lifeline have seamless floors (epoxy resin) with medicated paint on the walls. All the OTs and the ICUs have laminar flow as well, making the hospital safe, hygienic and enabling easy patient care. Lifeline, will, in fact, be one of the first eco-friendly hospitals with solar power, he added.
Lifeline aims to be one of the largest gastroenterology centres in Asia. It is also geared to be one of the largest infotech-guided hospitals with 49 modules in the Hospital Information Systems. With an aim of keeping constantly updated with the latest medical practices, the large 200-seater AC auditorium will be used to conduct workshops and other academic functions.
The hospital will continue to pioneer clinical trials. This is one area where work has already begun and Lifeline will soon be floating Medco-Lifeline for dedicated services in this area.
This 225-bed, multi-super specialty hospital, spanning over two acres, will offer a 52-bed ICU; 7 operation theatres and 24 hours emergency medical services, all in the first phase of this facility. The completed institution will be a 550-bed one.

In December 2004, a function was held to celebrate the completion of 1,000 major free surgeries and which was presided by the US Consul General, Dr Richard Haynes.
With an intense commitment to education and continuous learning through periodical training and workshops, these sessions at Lifeline are intended to benefit fresh graduates in surgery to derive the advantage of having "hands on" experience in surgical operations, Dr Rajkumar said.
