Cricket for a cause

'Score a Run and Save a Life' was the slogan of the Cancer Institute (WIA) Inter-Corporate softball cricket tournament conducted by the Friends of Cancer Institute in Chennai recently. It was inaugurated by film actor Jeeva. The tournament was conducted as a fund-raising event for the Adyar Cancer Institute, whereby the entry fee of Rs. 25,000 per team was contributed towards the Adyar Cancer Institute.

The torunament was held on April 1 and 2, 2006, at the YMCA ground, Nandanam, Chennai.

The participating teams for the year 2006 were - L&T ECC, Cairn Energy, E-Funds, Verizon, Satyam, Saint Gobain, Polaris, Sundaram Finance, Playboys - Tamil TV stars, Grundfos, Computer Associates, Times of India, Max New York Life, Cancer Institute, Quality Inn Sabari and Cognizant Technologies.

Each team got to play a minimum of 3 league matches and knock-out thereafter. The teams could celebrate every four and every sixer scored by their team by contributing Rs 100 for every 4 and Rs 200 for every 6 scored (optional).
