Workshop for parents of kids with autism
FIVE - Centre for Child Development - is conducting a free workshop for parents of children with autism spectrum disorder to understand their sensory processing problems and related behavioural issues. The workshop is being conducted on January 5 and 6, 2007, between 3 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. at No. 28, Vada Agaram Road, Mehta Nagar, Chennai 600 029.
The focus of the workshop is on helping parents understand and manage the sensory processing problems and related behavioural issues that might affect their child's development and learning. It will help parents demarcate purely behavioural issues from those possibly due to sensory dysfunction.
The workshop includes practical sessions where parents will experience what their children are going through because of disruptions to their sensory systems.
Parents will be counselled on what accommodations and modifications can and should be made within the child's immediate environment by planning a good 'sensory diet' for the child that will help both the parent and child cope with the situation.
The activities in a sensory diet will help parents understand the kind of sensory input that will help children feel less threatened by sensory experiences, be calmer, more focused and better able to cope.
Parents who would like to attend the workshop may register their names by phone at the following numbers: 94444-07847, 9884161134 and 23744779.
