Lifeline
A US Citizen from Alabama, Super Obese (BMI), weighing close to about 300 lbs, landed in Chennai with the best of her trust piled up on what she had heard and read about the 'Obesity Management Unit at Lifeline Hospitals', Chennai. She had uncontrolled Diabetes Mellitus, Severe IHD, HT, Gastric Oesophageal Reflex disease, Osteoarthritis, Diabetic Neuropathy and Para Umbilical Hernia, all these complications quantified beyond allowed limits.
The patient’s attempts with diet control and life style modification proved futile. She had been on one of the highest doses of insulin that could be administered and a huge cocktail of anti-hypertensive drugs didn’t help either.
She was admitted on January 18th, 2006, and a five-hour-long laparoscopic procedure, Bypass (both restrictive and Mal absorption) was performed on her by Dr. J S Rajkumar. Post operatively, she was put on Oral fluids on the second day and today, she walks on the corridors of Lifeline Multi Specialty Hospitals, Perungudi, determined to carry the memories of her optimistic and victorious tour down to India, back to the US.
"The Alabaman, should lose about 100 lbs in the next few months", said Dr
Rajkumar.
The first Lap 'Bariatric surgery' in South India was done by Dr. J S Rajkumar in 1997 and since then 34 similar procedures have been done with no serious complications or causalities. This is the highest number of 'Bariatric surgery' conducted successfully in South India.
