 Exclusive eye institute for diabetes
Indira Eye Institute for Diabetes, a state-of-the-art eye evaluation and management facility with the distinction of being one of the exclusive diabetic eye institutes in the country, was inaugurated in Chennai on September 2, 2006, by Tamil Nadu Health and Family Welfare Minister K K S S R Ramachandran.
A unit of Dr Mohans' Diabetes Specialities Centre (MDSC), set up in 1991, it has facilities for performing grading of diabetic retinopathy by means of an international grading system.
Comparing diabetes to slow poison, Ramachandran said changing food habits and lifestyles could be a major factor for the sharp increase in the number of diabetics in the country.
Mentioning that the state government had earmarked Rs 15 crore for treatment of eye disorders, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, Tamil Nadu Health Secretary V K Subburaj said, "About five crore people in the country afflicted with heart problems need surgical intervention while over 20 per cent of the population suffered from diabetes."
Assuring that the government would provide the best medical care to the masses, he suggested that centres like the Indira Eye Institute for Diabetes be opened not only in the state but also in other parts of the country.
Speaking on the occasion, MDSC chairman and chief diabetologist, Dr V Mohan, said MDSC was the world's first ISO 9001-2000 certified centre for quality of its services.
