Dr.
Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, Cathedral Road, has successfully performed
Intra-ocular lens (IOL) implant on Anandhi, a 4 year old girl, using
glued IOL technology. For the first time in the world, tissue glue
or fibrin glue as it is called has been used to fix an intraocular
lens in an eye. This new surgical procedure was invented and
performed by Prof. Amar Agarwal, Joint Managing Director, Dr.
Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, Chennai.
Addressing a press conference, Amar Agarwal said
that Anandhi, who belonged to Sirumalai, a village near Villupuram,
had an injury in her right eye during Diwali while bursting
crackers. When there was no improvement in the treatment given at a
hospital in Villupuram, Anandhi was brought to Dr. Agarwal’s Eye
Hospital, Chennai.
Amar
Agarwal said that the child had severe complications, that the
intra-ocular lens could not be implanted. Hence, he used fibrin glue
to fix the lens.
Dr. Divya, one of the ophthalmologists who
attended on Anandhi, said that the fibrin glue is made of fibrinogen
and thrombin. .She said, unlike sutures, the tissue glue keep the
lens firm. The doctor also said that the glue does not cause any
side effects and it is safe.
