A private hospital has performed the first of its kind surgery in the world, correcting seven abnormalities of the heart of a patient, through a major open heart surgery on March 12.
"This is the first time that such a surgery has been done in the world," Dr V V Bashi of MIOT hospitals claimed in
Chennai.
He said the patient, Lenin Tamil Kovan, who was born with a blue baby heart, underwent a western shunt in 1967 and was diagnosed with Pentology of Fallot's with multiple holes in the heart. Dr Bashi said Kovan had approached the hospital with a history of breathlessness and palpitation on exertion.
The doctor said an angiogram and cardiac catheterisation revealed seven abnormalities. This was corrected with a major open heart surgery, which took about eight hours to complete, he said. (Agencies)
