Poor, expectant mothers in rural Tamil
Nadu will soon be able to access free ambulance service
offered by the Health Department to rush them to hospitals
when they are in labour pain.
The scheme, to be launched in Dharmapuri
district on August 1, would soon be extended to other parts
of the state, a top official of the department has said.
As many as 900 ambulances have been
procured for the purpose, he said, on condition of
anonymity.
Block-level health employees have been
asked to keep the data regarding the expected date of
delivery of women in the rural areas, so that they could
help them rush to hospitals in time for the delivery.
The health employees would also give
their phone numbers to the families of poor women in the
rural areas in order to contact them for the ambulance
service, he added.
In a bid to bring down infant mortality
rate, the state government had been recently concentrating
on increasing institutional deliveries, he said, adding, a
major problem in rural areas was getting transport to the
hospitals. (Agencies)
