Each
and every one of us likes to be slim and fit. But, due to our
food habits and heredity, it is not possible to be so. Obesity
is a relatively recent problem faced by people of all age
groups.
Admert Obesity Management Centre helps people
overcome the problem. Dr. Ravindran Kumeran, Leading Surgical
Gastroenterologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon, Director of Admert
Obesity Management Centre said that in India around three
percent of the population is suffering from morbid obesity
(clinically severe obesity), which leads to health problems like
diabetes, blood pressure, arthritis, cholesterol, heart attack,
stroke and breast cancer.
“People are not aware of the health
complications. People suffering from morbid obesity have more
risk of early death”, says the doctor.
Dr. Ravindran Kumeran advises that it is very
important to keep track of one’s Body Mass Index (BMI). “It is
calculated as weight in kilogram divided by height in metres
squared. The BMI should not exceed 30, which is the obesity
level and 40, the morbid obesity level. BMI between 20 and 25 is
considered normal and from 25 to 30 is over weight”, he says.
Diet and exercise alone do not help a morbid
obese patient. Bariatric surgery is must for them, the doctor
adds. “However, the cost of the surgery is around Rs 2 lakhs, as
most of the equipments are imported from the US, costing around
Rs 125 lakhs”, says Ravindran Kumeran. Any body between the age
group of 18 and 65 are eligible for the surgery, he says.
In order to create awareness about obesity,
Admert Obesity Management Centre organizes the Obesity Support
Group, from whom anyone can get his or her queries regarding
obesity answered.
Dr. Ravindran Kumeran says that under the
obesity support group, which is conducted regularly, the
patients are given counselling and they are also given
opportunities to interact with the patients who had undergone
the surgery.
