Chennai Pollen Watch - March 2- March 8 Data compiled:
The data represent the results of continuous pollen monitoring conducted during Mach 2 - March 8. The monitoring is done by exposing adhesive coated glass cylinder in the Vertical Cylinder Trap for a period of 24 hours, installed at a height of 15 meters in 5 different zones (Royapettah, Anna Nagar, Villavakkam, Washermenpet and Gandhi Mandapam) in the city of Chennai. The results are presented as mean of all five sites. Though the atmosphere of Chennai consists of a large number of pollen types only a few are represented in the figure according to their dominance. This week's report shows the predominance of Feronia elephantum (Vilambazham), Prosopis juliflora (Velikaruvel), Casuarina equisetifloia (Savukku), Cocos nucifera (Thennai), Parthenium hysterophorus (Parthenium) and the pollen types of family Amaranthaceae. The pollen grains of Feronia elephantum occupied the dominant position with a contribution of 20.4% to the total. The trees in the city are flowering and that is the cause for its dominance in the atmosphere. The pollen grains of Prosopis juliflora (18.4%) retained its second position with a small decline in its contribution Casuarina equisetifolia (16.9%) starts declining. The other significant contributors are the pollen grains of Cocos nucifera (13.6%) and highly allergenic pollens of Parthenium hysterophorus (13.3%). The other pollen types contributed to17.4%. A total of 25 different pollen types were identified. [Fact File: Among 2180 patients studied for respiratory allergy in Chennai, 46.75% are women.] Compiled by: V.Raju, B.P.R. Vittal, N.K.
