Pollen Watch - Feronia elephantum
The data represents the result of continuous pollen monitoring conducted between April 20 & April 26. The monitoring is done by exposing adhesive coated glass cylinder in the vertical cylinder trap for a period of 24 hours, installed at a height of 15 metres in 5 different zones (Anna Nagar, Gandhi Mandapam, Royapettah, Villivakkam and Washermanpet) in the city of Chennai. The results are presented as mean of all five sites. Though the atmosphere of Chennai consists of a large number of pollen types only a few are represented in the data according to their dominance. The report shows the predominance of Feronia elephantum, Lannea coromandelica, Prosopis juliflora, Cocos nucifera and pollens of the family Amaranthaceae in that order.
The pollen grains of Feronia elephantum dominated the atmosphere of Chennai city with a contribution of 34.1%. Lannea coromandelica that dominated the atmosphere in the previous week fell to the second position with 22.1% as its contribution. This is due to the late flowering of some plants of Feronia elephantum. The pollen grains of Prosopis juliflora, Cocos nucifera and the family Amaranthaceae are significant in the atmosphere. They contributed 7.4%, 5.1% and 5% respectively to the total. The other pollen types contributed around 26.3%. A total of 20 pollen types were recorded. (Fact file: Wiquar A. Shaikh reported that 9.16% of the people are allergic to the pollen grains of Cocos nucifera - IJCP - Allergy and Asthma: A Clinical Primer, 1999). Compiled by: V. Raju, B.P.R. Vittal, N.K.
