Chennai Pollen Watch - Cocos nucifera
The above data represents the result of continuous pollen monitoring conducted between April 27 and May 03. The monitoring is done by exposing adhesive coated glass cylinder in the vertical cylinder trap for a period of 24 hours, installed at a height of 15 meters in different zones (Anna Nagar, Gandhi Mandapam, Royapettah, Villivakkam and Washermenpet) in the city of Chennai. The results are presented as mean of all five sites. Though the atmosphere of Chennai consists of a large number of pollen types only a few are represented in the data according to their dominance. This report shows the predominance of the pollen of Cocos nucifera, Feronia elephantum, Prosopis juliflora, Azadirachta indica, Borassus sp and Lannea coromandelica in that order.
The pollen grains of Cocos nucifera dominated the atmosphere during this study period with a contribution of 27.1%. It was closely followed by Feronia elephantum (26.7%) occupying the second position. The pollens of Prosopis juliflora and Azadirachta indica contributed 8% each to the total. The other significant contributors were Borassus sp (6.7%) and Lannea coromandelica (6.5%). The other pollen types contributed around 17% and a total of 24 pollen types were recorded.
