Allergy Corner - Chennai Pollen Watch
The above data represents the result of continuous pollen monitoring conducted between May 10 and May 17. The monitoring is done by exposing adhesive coated glass cylinder in the Vertical Cylinder Trap for a period of 24 hours, installed at a height of 15 metres in 5 different zones (Anna Nagar, Gandhi Mandpaam, Royapettah, Villivakkam and Washermenpet) in the city of Chennai. The results are presented as mean of all five sites. Though the atmosphere of Chennai consists of a large number of pollen types only a few are represented in the data according to their dominance. The report shows the predominance of the pollen of Cocos nucifera, Prosopis juliflora, Azadirachta indica, Borassus flabellifer and Acalypha indica in that order.
The atmosphere of Chennai was dominated by the pollen grains of Cocos nucifera with its contribution of 35.90% to be total pollen recorded. It was followed by Prosopis juliflora (12.08%) and Azadirachta indica (10.29%) occupying second and third positions in their dominance. The other significant contributors were Borassus flabellifer (7.49%) and Acalypha indica (7.16%). The other pollen types contributed around 27.06%. A total of 27 pollen types were recorded.
