Allergy Corner - Cocos nucifera
The above data represents the result of continuous pollen monitoring conducted between May 25 and May 31. The monitoring is done by exposing adhesive coated glass cylinder in the Vertical Cylinder Trap for a period of 24 hours, installed at a height of 15 metres in 5 different zones (Anna Nagar, Gandhi Mandapam, Royapettah, Villivakkam, and Washermenpet) in the city of Chennai. The results are presented as mean of all five sites. Though the atmosphere of Chennai consists of a large number of pollen types only a few are represented in the data according to their dominance. The report shows the predominance of the pollens of Cocos nucifera, Borassus fiabellifer, Prosopis juliflora, Cassia siamea, Poaceae and Parthenium hysterophorus in that order. The pollen grains of Cocos nucifera continued to dominate this week. Their contribution to the total was 53.6%. This was followed by Borassus fiabellifer and Prosopis juliflora with 11.8% and 8.8% respectively. The pollen of Cassia siamea contributed 4.9% to the total. When compared to last week, this is higher because of the initiation of flowering of these plants in the city. The pollen belonging to the family Poaceae and Parthenium hysterophorus contributed 4% and 3.6% respectively to the total. The other pollen types (17) contributed around 14.3%.
