The above data represents the result of continuous pollen monitoring conducted between June 22 and June 28. The monitoring is done by exposing adhesive coated glass cylinder in the Vertical Cylinder Trap for a period of 24 hours, installed at a height of 15 meters in 5 different zone (Anna Nagar, Gandhi Mandapam, Royapettah, Villivakkam and Washermenpet) in the city of Chennai. The results are presented as mean of all five sites. Though the atmosphere of Chennai consists of a large number of pollen types only a few are represented in the data according to their dominance. The report shows the predominance of the pollen of Cocos nucifera, Syzygium cumini, Parthenium hysterophorus, Prosopis juliflora, Tamarindus indica and Poaceae in that order. The pollens of Cocos nucifera dominated the atmosphere of Chennai during this week with the contribution of 28.1% to the total. The second position was occupied by Syzygium cumini that contributed 15.6% to the total. The third and fourth positions were occupied by Parthenium hysterophorus and Prosopis juliflora with contributions of 10.4% and 9.1% respectively. The pollen of Tamarindus indica (7.1%) and Poaceae (5.2%) also contributed significantly to the total. The other pollen types contributed around 24.8%. A total of 29 pollen types were recorded.
