Casuarina equisetifolia accounts for 43%
The figure represents the results of continuous pollen monitoring conducted during Feb 23- Mar 1. The monitoring is done by exposing adhesive coated glass cylinder in the Vertical Cylinder Trap for a period of 24 hours, installed at a height of 15 metres in 5 different zones (Royapettah, Anna Nagar, Villivakkam, Washermenpet and Gandhi Mandapam) in the city of Chennai. The results are presented as mean of all five sites. Though the atmosphere of Chennai consists of a large number of pollen types only a few are represented in the figure according to their dominance. This week's report shows the predominance of Casuarina equisetifolia [Savukku], Prosopis juliflora [Velikaruvel], Cocos nucifera [Thenali], Poaceae, Cassia siamea [Manjakonnai] and Amaranthaceae. Among them Casuarina equisetifolia alone accounted for more than 43% and occupied the first place. It was followed by Prosopis juliflora (20.8%), which dominated the previous week. This is due to intensive flowering of Casuarina than Proposis. The pollen of Cocos nucifera contributed 6.76 %. The other significant contributors are pollen belonging to the family Poaceae (4.42%), Cassia siamea [Fact file: Among the 2180 patients reporting respiratory allergy in Chennai, 42.75% reported positive family history] Compiled by: V.
