Syzygium cumini

The above data represents the result of continuous pollen monitoring conducted between June 29 and July 5. The monitoring is done by exposing adhesive coated glass cylinder in the Vertical Cylinder Trap for a period of 24 hours, installed at a height of 15 meters in 5 different zones (Anna Nagar, Gandhi Mandapam, Royapettah, Villivakkam and Washermenpet) in the city of Chennai. The results are presented as mean of all five sites. Though the atmosphere of Chennai consists of a large number of pollen types only a few are represented in the data according to their dominance. The report shows the predominance of the pollen of Syzygium cumini, Cocos nucifera, Tamarindus indica, Parthenium hysterophorus and Prosopis juliflora, in that order.

The pollen of Syzygium cumini that was in second place last week dominated the atmosphere of Chennai this week with a contribution of 21.21% to the total. The second position was occupied by Cocos nucifera and it contributed 15.84% to the total. The third position was occupied by Tamarindus indica with a contribution of 14.42%. The pollen of Parthenium hysterophorus (9.1%) and Prosopis juliflora (6.93%) also contributed significantly to the total. The other pollen types contributed around 23.62%. A total of 27 pollen types were recorded.

(Fact file: The size of the pollen particles is found influencing the kind of reaction that may occur. Large pollen grains more often cause allergic reactions, and if the particles are small they end up deep in the lungs and can cause asthma)
