The above data represents the result of continuous pollen monitoring conducted between July 6 and July 12. The monitoring is done by exposing adhesive coated glass cylinder in the vertical cylinder trap for a period of 24 hours, installed at a height of 15 meters in 5 different zones (Anna Nagar, Gandhi Mandapam, Royapettah, Villivakkam and Washermenpet) in the city of Chennai. The results are presented as mean of all the five sites. Though the atmosphere of Chennai consists of a large number of pollen types only a few are represented in the data according to their dominance. The report shows the predominance of the pollens of Cocos nucifera, Tamarindus indica, Prosopis juliflora, Cassia siamea, Phyllanthes amarus and Asteraceae in that order. The pollen of Cocos nucifera dominated the atmosphere of Chennai city during this week. The pollen of Tamarindus indica and Prosopis juliflora contributed around 11.7% and 7.2% respectively and occupied second and third positions by their dominance. The pollen grains of Cassia siamea (6.2%), Phyllanthes amarus (5.8%) and the family Asteraceae (5.8%) contributed significantly to the total. The other pollen types contributed around 25.5%. A total of 19 pollen types were recorded. (Fact file: Allergic conjunctivitis is the other common allergic reaction triggered by airborne antigens such as pollen grains. - K.
