The above data represents the result of continuous pollen monitoring conducted between July 20 and July 26. The monitoring is done by exposing adhesive coated glass cylinder in the Vertical Cylinder Trap for a period of 24 hours installed at a height of 15 metres in 5 different zones (Anna Nagar, Gandhi Mandapam, Royapettah, Villiwakkam and Washermenpet) in the city of Chennai. The results are presented as mean of all five sites. Though the atmosphere of Chennai consists of a large number of pollen types only a few are represented in the data according to their dominance. The report shows the predominance of the pollen of Tamarindus indicus, members of Poaceae, Cocos nucifera, Delonix regia and Ricinus communis.

Ricinus communis

The pollen grains of Tamarindus indicus dominated the atmosphere of Chennai this week with the contribution of 39.6% to the total. The pollen grains belonging to the family of Poaceae occupied the second place and Cocos nucifiera, came third with contributions of 11.1% and 9.9% to the total respectively. The contribution of Delonix regia and Ricinus communis are 8.1% and 5.6% respectively. The other pollen types (21) contributed to around 25.7%.

(Fact file: Skin prick test is widely performed to detect whether a person is sensitive (allergic) to a particular substance, i.e., pollen, moulds, food, dust, etc.).
