The above data represents the result of continuous pollen monitoring conducted between July 27 and Aug. 02. The monitoring is done by exposing adhesive coated glass cylinder in the vertical cylinder trap for a period of 24 hours installed at a height of 15 meters in 5 different zones (Anna Nagar, Gandhi Mandapam, Royapettah, Villiwakkam and Washermenpet) in the city of Chennai. The results are presented as mean of all the five sites. Though the atmosphere of Chennai consists of a large number of pollen types only a few are represented in the data according to their dominance. The report shows the predominance of the pollen of Tamarindus indicus, Zizyphus oenoplia, Cassia alata, Cocos nucifera, and members of Cyperaceae in that order. The pollen grains of Tamarindus indicus dominated the atmosphere of Chennai continuously for the second week with a contribution of 31.9% to the total. However, its percentage contribution was lower than the previous week. The pollen grains belonging to Zizyphus oenoplia occupied the second position and Cassia alata occupied third position with contributions of 19.6% and 13.1% respectively. The contribution of Cocos nucifera and members of Cyperaceae was significant (more than 5% as their contribution to the total). The other pollen types (14) contributed around 23%. (Fact file: Airborne pollens are one among the inducers of allergic rhinitis that is characterised by nasal blockage, running nose and/or sneezing - Wigar S.Ahmed, IJCP. A Clinical Primer -1999).
