Pollen of Poaceae

The data represent the results of continuous pollen monitoring during Aug. 3 and Aug. 9. The monitoring is done by exposing adhesive coated glass cylinder in the Vertical Cylinder Trap for a period of 24 hours, installed at a height of 15 meters in 5 different zones (Anna Nagar, Gandhi Mandapam, Royapettah, Villiwakkam and Washermanpet) in the city of Chennai. The results obtained are presented as mean of all five sites. Though the atmosphere of Chennai consists of a large number of pollen types only a few are represented according to their dominance. This week's report shows the predominance of the pollen grains of the Poaceae, Tamarindus indica, Cocos nucifera, Parthenium hysterophorus, Zizyphus oenoplia, Amaranthaceae, Cassia siamea in that order.

The pollen grains of the family Poaceae (Grass family) dominated the atmosphere of Chennai city with its contribution of more than 30% to the total. This was followed by the pollen of Tamarindus indica that occupied the first position during the past two weeks. The contribution of Tamarindus indica was 21.7% to the total.
