The data represents the results of continuous pollen monitoring from Aug’10 to Aug’ 16. The monitoring is done by exposing adhesive coated glass cylinder in the Vertical Cylinder Trap for a period of 24 hours, installed at a height of 15 meters in 5 different zones (Anna Nagar, Gandhi Mandapam, Royapettah, Villivakkam and Washermanpet) in the city of Chennai. The results obtained are presented as mean of all five sites. Though the atmosphere of Chennai consists of a large number of pollen types, only a few are represented according to their dominance. This week’s report shows the predominance of the members of Poaceae, Parthenium hysterophorus, Prosopis juliflora, Tamarindus indica, members of Cyperaceae and Cassia Siamea in that order. The pollen grains of the family Poaceae (Grass family) dominated the atmosphere of Chennai city for the second consecutive week with the contribution of 24.2%. In the previous week the contribution of Parthenium hysterophorus (which was reported as highly allergenic in Bangalore) and Prosopis julliflora (Common Australian weed) was 17.1 and 9.4% respectively. The other significant contributors to the total are Tamarindus indica (7.4%), members of Cyperaceae (6.8%) and Cassia Siamea (6.7%). The other pollen types contributed 28.5% to the total. A total of 26 pollen types were recorded. (Query raised by Muthu Bhuvana Sundaram on 30.5.2001 to our site: What does the pollen count mean to us? Is there any average comparison? What are the effects of such pollen? What are the diseases induced due to that? How can we protect? t.sundaram@chennai.transys.net Dear Sir, Thank you for raising a query The pollen count gives you the picture about the airborne pollen of the Chennai city. There is no average comparison. But, in Bangalore the study is going on and the results are published in Friday issues of “The Times of India”. The airborne pollen is found to cause variety of allergic diseases like allergic conjunctivitis, allergic rhinitis and other respiratory disorders. You can detect yourself whether you are allergic to a particular pollen by diagnosing yourself by skin prick test etc., and you can also protect yourself from such factors by avoidance and if required by immunotherapy. Please keep writing about your doubts etc., to us without hesitation. (Compiled by: V. Raju, B.P.R. Vittal. N. K. Udaya Prakash., T. Janaki and S.
