The above data represents the result of continuous pollen monitoring conducted between Aug 17 to Aug 23. The monitoring is done by exposing adhesive coated glass cylinder in the Vertical Cylinder trap for a period of 24 hours, installed at a height of 15 meters in 5 different zones ( Anna Nagar, Gandhi Mandapam, Royapettah, Villivakkam and Washermanpet) in the city of Chennai. The results are presented as mean of all five sites. Though the atmosphere of Chennai consists of a large number of pollen types only a few are represented in the data according to their dominance. The report shows the predominance of the pollen of Poaceae, Parthenium hysterophorus, Tamarindus indica, Ricinus communis, Cocos nucifera and Prosopis juliflora in that order. It is the pollen of the family Poaceae dominating the atmosphere for the third consecutive week with it's contribution of 22.4 % to the total. The pollen of Parthenium hysterophorus (20.6%) and Tamarindus indica (11.%) occupied second and third position respectively. The pollen grains of Ricinus communis(9.1%), Cocos nucifera(8.2%) and Prospis juliflora (3.8%) contributed significantly to the total. The other pollen types contributed 24% to the total. A total of 22 pollen types were recorded. (Query raised by D.Daniel on 8-4-2001 to our site) You have given the pollen counts. I think this will be common anywhere trees are found. Is it causing Asthma? Or aggravate it? If that is so what is the remedy? Thank you Daniel, We accept that the pollen grain present in the atmosphere is common. But, data related to the various pollen present in the atmosphere is significant and it varies drastically according to season. These pollen are found to cause some allergic diseases in immunocompromised patients and they may be allergic to specific pollen types. They are one among the factors responsible for triggering allergic diseases. The simplest remedy is avoiding exposure to such pollens and to diagnose yourself whether you are allergic to such pollens and if so, by immunotherapy. Compiled by:V.Raju, B.P.R Vittal,N.K.
