Azadirachta indica

The above data represents the result of continuous pollen monitoring conducted from August 24 to August 30. The monitoring is done by exposing adhesive coated glass cylinder in the Vertical Cylinder Trap for a period of 24 hours, installed at a height of 15 meters in 5 different zones (Anna Nagar, Gandhi Mandapam, Royapettah, Villivakkam and Washermenpet) in the city of Chennai. The results are presented as mean of all five sites. Though the atmosphere of Chennai consists of a large numbers of pollen types only a few are represented in the data according to their dominance. The report shows the predominance of the pollen of Poaceae, Tamarindus indica, Parthenium hysterophorus, Cocos nucifera, Azadirachta indica, Typha angustata, Cassia siamea and Prosopis juliflora in that order.

The atmosphere of Chennai was dominated continuously by the pollen grains of family Poaceae for the past one month. its contribution to the total was 21.9%. The pollen of Tamarindus indica and Parthenium hysterophorus occupied second and third position in dominance with the contribution of 13.2% and 12.1% respectively. The pollen of Cocos nucifera (8.7%), Azadirachta indica (5.6.%), Typha angustata (4.9%), Cassia siamea (2.9%) and Prosopis juliflora (2.9.%) are the other significant contributors. The other pollen types contributed 28.2%. A total of 18 pollen types were recorded.

It is heartwarming to see that an Indian site has devoted sometime to the environment. That there have been no comments on this issue speaks about the empathy and awareness Indians have on this issue. I look forward to seeing more articles on these matters. Can you publish details of any environmental groups working in Chennai? We would love to be in touch with them. Keep up the good work.

Regards.
