Pollen of Poaceae

The figure represents the results of continuous pollen monitoring conducted between Sept.15 and Sept. 21. The monitoring is done by exposing adhesive coated glass cylinder in the Vertical Cylinder Trap for a period of 24 hours, installed at a height of 15 metres in 5 different zones -Anna Nagar, Gandhi Mandapam, Royapettah, Villivakkam and Washermenpet in the city of Chennai. The results are presented as mean of all five sites. Though the atmosphere of Chennai consists of a large number of pollen types only a few are represented in the figure according to their dominance. This report shows the predominance of Poaceae, Cocos nucifera, Cassia siamea, Prosopis juliflora, Amaranthaceae and Parthenium hysterophorus in that order.

It was the pollen of Poaceae that has dominated the atmosphere for the past 7 weeks, starting from the first week of August. Its contribution to the total was 27.8%. The pollens of Cocos nucifera, Cassia siamea, Prosopis juliflora occupied second, third and fourth positions with contributions of 17.2, 16.5 and 4.6% respectively. They occupied the same position last week too. The pollens of Amaranthaceae (3.5%) and Parthenium hysterophorus (3.2%) are the other significant contributors. The other pollen types recorded around 27%. A total of 16 pollen types were recorded.

"It has to be shown on TV every day like weather report we have in South Africa."

"Thank you for your comment Aravindh. In India, awareness related to pollen allergy is poor. We are initiating the work to create awareness about these facts and we will try to do our level best."
