Atmosphere of Chennai - Pollen Watch
The figure represents results of continuous pollen monitoring conducted during March 9 - March 15. The monitoring is done by exposing adhesive coated glass cylinder in the Vertical Cylinder Trap for a period of 24 hours, installed at a height of 15 metres in 5 different zones (Anna Nagar, Gandhi Mandapam, Royapettah, Villivakkam and Washermenpet) in the city of Chennai. The results are presented as mean of all five sites. Though the atmosphere of Chennai consists of a large number of pollen types only a few are represented in the data according to their dominance. This week's report shows the predominance of
Feronia elephantum The pollen grains of Feronia elephantum are dominant in the atmosphere of Chennai this week. The trees are in intensive flowering and that accounted for nearly 59.2%. The pollen grains of Prosopis juliflora retained its second position consequetively for the third week with a contribution of 12.8%. The pollen grains of Cocos nudifera and Parthenuim hysterophorus are raised to third and fourth position from the fourth and fifth position they were in last week. Their percentage contribution to the total are 7.9% and 3.1% respectively. The pollen grains of the families Amaranthaceae, Casuarina equisetifolia and Pongamia pinnata are the other significant contributors. The other pollen types contributed to the remaining 11%.
