The pollen grains of Feronia elephantum

Feronia elephantum (Vilampazham) 31.7%

The figure represents the results of continuous pollen monitoring conducted between March 23 and 29. The monitoring is done by exposing adhesive coated glass cylinder in the Vertical Cylinder Trap for a period of 24 hours, installed at a height of 15 metres in 5 different zones (Anna Nagar), Gandhi Mandapam, Royapettah, Villivakkam and Washermenpet) in the city of Chennai. The results are presented as mean of all five sites. Though the atmosphere of Chennai consists of a large number of pollen types only a few are represented in the figure according to their dominance.

This week's report shows the predominance of Feronia elephantum (Vilampazham), Azadirachta indica (Vembu), Prosopis juliflora (Velikaruvel), Cocos nucifera (Thennai) Parthenium hysterophorus (Parthenium) and members of Poaceae in that order.

The pollen grains of Feronia elephantum continues to dominate the atmosphere of Chennai continuously for the past three weeks. Its contribution was the same as on the previous week (31.7%). The pollen grains of Azadirachta indica occupied second position with the contribution of 14.7% that was in third position the previous week. The pollen grains of Prosopis juliflora and Cocos nucifera occupied third and fourth position with the contribution of 14.2% and 13.8% respectively. The pollen grains of the Parthenium hysterophorus (2.6%) and family Poaceae (2.5%) are the other significant contributors to the total. The other pollen types contributed around 20.4% to the total. A total of 30 different pollen types were identified.
