Chennai pollen watch and the results

Azadirachta indica (Neem) 29.4%

Prosopis juliflora (Velikaruval) 15.3%

Parthenium hysterophorus (Parthenium) 13.4%

Cocos nucifera (Coconut) 13.3%

Feronia elephantum (Vilampazham) 5.7%

Others 20%

The above data represents the result of continuous pollen monitoring conducted between March 30 and April 5. The monitoring is done by exposing adhesive coated glass cylinder in the vertical cylinder trap for a period of 24 hours, installed at a height of 15 metres in 5 different zones (Anna Nagar, Gandhi Mandapam, Royapettah, Villivakkam and Washermanpet) in the city of Chennai. The results are presented as mean of all five sites. Though the atmosphere of Chennai consists of a large number of pollen types only a few are represented in the data according to their dominance. The report shows the predominance of the pollen of Azadirachta indica, Prosopis juliflora, Parthenium hysterophorus, Cocos Nucifera and Feronia elephantum in that order.

The atmosphere of Chennai was dominated by the pollen grains of Azadirachta indica followed by Prosopis juliflora with the contribution of 29.4% and 15.3% respectively. The pollen of Azadirachta and Prosopis were in the second and third positions last week. The predominance is due to the intensive flowering of the plants. The pollen grain of Parthenium hysterophorus and Cocos nucifera occupied third and fourth positions respectively with the percentage contribution of 13.4 and 13.3 to the total. As the flowering of Feronia elephantum started declining it came down to fifth position with a contribution of only 5.7% to the total, whereas it had occupied a dominant position in the past four weeks. The other pollen types contributed to around 20% to the total. A total of 27 pollen types were identified in the city.
