Lannea coromandelica (Udiyam) dominates
The above data represents the result of continuous pollen monitoring conducted between April 13 and April 19. The monitoring is done by exposing adhesive coated glass cylinder in the vertical cylinder trap for a period of 24 hours, installed at a height of 15 meters in different zones (Anna Nagar, Gandhi Mandapam, Royapettah, Villivakkam and Washermanpet) in the city of Chennai. The results are presented as mean of all the five sites. Though the atmosphere of Chennai consists of a large number of pollen types, only a few are represented in the data according to their dominance. The report shows the predominance of the pollens - Lannea coromandelica, Feronia elephantum, Cocos nucifera, Parthenium hysterophorus, Azadirachta indica and Prosopis julflora in that order.
The pollen grains of Lannea coromandelica (Udiyam) dominate the atmosphere of Chennai with its contribution of 36.2% to the total pollen recorded. Feronia elephantum occupied the second position pushing down Cocos nucifera to the third position. Their percentage contribution was 27.5% and 9.8% respectively. The contribution of the allergenic weed, Parthenium hysterophorus was 6.9%. The pollen of Azadirachta indica (5.2%) and Prosopis juliflora (3.8%) also contributed significantly to the total. The other pollen types recorded 10.6% from a total of 20 pollen types recorded. (Fact file: 19.2% of the people showed positive allergic reaction to pollens of Parthenium - Wiqar A. Shaikh, Allergy and Asthma - A clinical primer, IJCP, 1999). Complied by: V.Raju, B.P.R. Vittal, N.K. Udaya Prakash, T. Janaki & S. Bhuvaneshwari.
