Wavefront technology laser

Well-known Chennai-based ophthalmologist Dr Amar Agarwal claims to have discovered a new refractive error called 'Aberropia' and indicated that patients suffering from this disorder could be treated with 'wavefront technology laser', to enable them regain normal vision.

Addressing a press conference in Chennai, he said ophthalmologists normally treated patients only for 'myopia' (short sight) or 'Hypermetropia' (long sight). Now, there was another refractive error called 'Aberropia', where aberrations are present in the ocular media, resulting in loss of vision.

These patients were previously diagnosed as having 'Amblyopia' (lazy eye), and their vision could not be improved with glasses or contact lens.

"This discovery has gone for publication to leading international ophthalmic journals in the world," he said.

He said patients suffering from Aberropia would be examined using a special machine, the Aberrometer. They could be treated with wavefront technology lasers. "Once these aberrations are removed, the patient regains normal vision of 6/6 and will be capable of reading all the seven lines in the vision chart".

Amar will be honoured at Chile in South America on December 6, where he will be presented the 'Barraquer Award' by one of the largest ophthalmic societies in the world for his discoveries in the ophthalmic field.
