Home Remedies - Part II

Nose. That part of the face that separates you immediately from another person and which you remember when you catch a cold.

* Mrs Rathi Ramananda says that the best way to clear a blocked nose is to roast a turmeric stick (virali manjal) by the lamp fire (the kind that is used in the pooja room) and inhale the smoke. She advises us to inhale through each nose separately for best results.

* She provides an alternative. If you can access eucalyptus oil, soak a piece of cloth in it and burn it. Inhale the smoke immediately to clear that blocked nose.

* If someone faints, she suggests that you squeeze a piece of onion and put a few drops inside the nostril. She guarantees that this will revive the person at once.

Mrs Rathi Ramananda has a whole host of remedies for the mouth and teeth.

* If you are suffering from decayed teeth or have cavities, she suggests that you gargle with gingelly oil (nallennai) before brushing your teeth. Leave the oil in the mouth for sometime and then brush your teeth as usual.

* Another treatment for toothache is to wash and boil keezhvanelli (available in most gardens or can be bought from the vegetable vendor) for about 10 minutes. Drain the water and when it becomes lukewarm, gargle till the pain goes away.

* For healthy teeth, gargle with salt water everyday, she says.

* If you have access to a mango tree, brush your teeth with the tender shoots of the tree.

To prevent your lips from cracking or to heal cracked lips, apply ghee or butter and leave it overnight.

For mouth ulcers, eat dried coconut and kasakasa (poppy seeds).
