Herbal village at Kelambi

The Voluntary Health, Education and Rural Development Society (VHERDS) has developed a village at Kelambi as a herbal village and the Tamil Nadu government will declare it as a herbal village on July 11.

The VHERDS, founded by the Sankaracharya of the Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt, Sri Jayendra Saraswati in 1985, aims to propagate herbal and Indian medicines among the masses. The idea is that herbal plants would be cultivated in the vast expanse of land and this would lead to growth of the industry and exports.

One of the activities of the VHERDS is to organise Herbal Expos and one such expo -- Health Products Expo 2003 and Seminar -- was held in Chennai from July 4 to 6.

Inaugurating the seminar, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare A Raja said the Centre had constituted a 'National Medicinal Plant Board' for promoting herbal medicine and other herbal products abroad and securing a fair share in the $ 65 billion global market.

At present the country's share in the world market was less than two per cent, compared to China's estimated share of over 20 per cent in the market, which was growing annually between 30 per cent and 40 per cent, he pointed out.

Inaugurating the expo, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Vidyasagar Rao said the time had come to switch to organic cultivation, which was now being adopted by western countries.

Alternatives to fertilisers and pesticides, from which Western countries had started distancing themselves, had to be found, he said, and added that use of these chemicals for increasing food production was slowly killing all forms of life, including humans and birds.

Rao stressed the importance of NGOs and said they would have to play a key role in the development of the country.

On July 6, Jayendra Saraswati called for a grassroots level movement to popularise and propagate indigenous systems of medicines like Ayurveda.

The seer was speaking after releasing a book 'Road Beyond Boundaries', brought out by the Export Import Bank of India on the marketing prospects of Indian healthcare systems. He said every household should grow medicinal plants in their courtyard.

Those who spoke on the occasion included the EXIM bank managing director T C Venkatsubramanian.
