Sankaracharya, Sachin share platform
The joy of a parent holding a perfectly formed baby for the very first time is indescribable. However, the emotional pain of holding a handicapped or deformed baby is truly overwhelming. Most deformities and disabilities occur during the period from the start of intra-uterine life to one week after birth.
The Centre for Preventive Perinatology has thus been formed at the Child Trust Hospital to address the issue of perinatal morbidity by identifying the causes, and implementing effective solutions. The centre is equipped with an ultra sound scan, which has the ability to identify any deformities in the babies within 16 weeks of pregnancy. A mobile van, which also forms part of the centre, is equipped with an incubator and ventilator, to render help at any part of the city. The Centre was inaugurated by the Sankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, Jayendra Saraswathi. Also present during the function were cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, David Abott, Acting Deputy British High Commissioner, David Abott, Chennai Wellington Corporate Foundation chairman V L Dutt. The Wellington Foundation has rendered great help towards the formation of the center.
The Centre also looks forward to educate and create awareness among people about the simple steps to be taken during pregnancy, which would to a great extent help prevent deformities in babies. Proper training will also be imparted to the staff of Government hospitals about Perinatal care. This would be taken up as a joint venture with the Chennai Corporation. Padma S
