Dress your way to health!

It is a fact that in the first half of his life, man toils to earn money and in the process neglects his health. In the second half, he spends the money earned, in medication and treatment. Every one knows that 'Health is Wealth', but how many take it seriously?

As soon as Man reaches forty, uninvited guests visit him. Diabetes, blood pressure, arthritis, nervous problems etc., make their entrance one by one and make his life traumatic. Food, shelter and clothing are the three vital necessities in one's life. But now it has become essential to add one more to this list - a healthy body. Unless one is healthy, he or she cannot enjoy the fruits of labour.

'Dress Maketh A Man', they say. One wears clothes according to the climatic conditions, and it is even better if one wears them according to their health. Usually, people prefer to wear cotton clothes during summer and woollen clothes during winter.

Today, J Sundaresan has gone a step further by designing a clothing which is related to health.

Sundaresan, who now lives in the US, was born in Salem, Tamil Nadu. His father Jayaraman was working in the AG's office and is now leading a peaceful retired life at Thiruvanmiyur in Chennai. Sundaresan did his schooling in Hyderabad (as his father was working there), and finished his B.Tech and M.Tech (1978) in Azhagappar Chettiar College, Guindy.

Presently, he is working as a Professor in Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta. When Chennaionline contacted him through mail and enquired about his new discovery -- a T-shirt -- he explained, "In 1996, the US government had advertised for information about methods to save the wounded soldiers. I sent a White paper about my T-Shirt to the government. The government, after scrutinising it, approved and agreed to finance the project".

Sungmee Park's contribution to his research and support for this project has been very crucial, he says.

Sundaresan firmly believes that through this special T-shirt, it is possible to determine one's blood pressure, heartbeat, oxygen content and body temperature. The T-Shirt warns a person if one's blood pressure increases or decreases, he elaborates. The person can get treated immediately, and even a minute change in the heart's function is revealed, which helps the person in taking prompt action.

This dress is designed to suit the young and old alike. It looks the same as the clothes we wear in our daily life, and weighs less too.

While talking about the design, Sundaresan explains that there are sensor points in the T-Shirt, and these points are connected to a small control box, which can be kept in the trouser pocket. If the blood pressure increases, the sensor points will pass on the information to the control box. The information can be seen in the control box monitor or in the monitor at the hospital. He plans to go further, by devising a monitor for diabetes as well.

"These shirts are woven from cotton and polyster threads. But optic fibre wires are also interwoven along with these threads. The sensor points can be found at the tip of these optic fibres. The body functions reach the control box through these points and from here, the information passes on to the monitor room, where it will be monitored."

This costs around Rs 12,000 in Indian currency (250 dollars). But in future, if this is manufactured for business purposes, there is a chance of reduction in price. He feels confident that there is every chance of this dress becoming affordable even by the poor.

After all the necessary business requisitions are finalised, it will be sold in the open market, he says. Currently, he is busy manufacturing T-Shirts that comprise a mike and a camera. Many American magazines have lauded this discovery of his. Super powers like America have turned their attention to India and China and in such a situation, there is no doubt that people like Sundaresan are rising to the occasion.
