Free cataract surgeries

SMILE [Selfless Movement Improving Life Everywhere], a philanthropic organisation conducted a free eye camp for the poor on October 11,2003, at Sathyamurthy School opposite Bala Mandir Kamaraj Trust, 126, G.N.Chetty Road, T.Nagar. Chennai - 600017 between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. After examining the patients, SMILE will facilitate cataract surgeries in relevant cases. The camp was open to all needy people with eye problems. SMILE also conducted a blood donation camp in association with Voluntary Health Services (VHS) Chennai on October 12, 2003, at Guntur Subbiah Pillai School, Opposite TTD Information Centre, T.Nagar. Chennai - 17. between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm

The blood donation camp was open for the public and the blood will be provided to the deserving poor.

They do not collect or donate money as they feel that a few hours of service in a month is sufficient.

Activities of SMILE In Chennai:

Health

• Monthly blood donation camps are conducted.

• Every day a minimum of ten volunteers render their services at The Cancer Institute, Adyar, Chennai. In the last few months over 1,000 volunteers have rendered service there.

• Free cataract surgery (300 numbers) and corrective surgery for polio affected people (100 numbers) are being conducted along with Rotary Club of Madras, Chennai.

Education

* Quarterly: - Seminars in schools and colleges on value added education.

Service

• Monthly: - Cleaning of places of worship in and around Chennai. 

• Service at The Cancer Institute, Adyar and other educational institutions.

Distribution of Goods to the Poor & Needy

• Monthly: - Clothes are distributed to the needy at various orphanages and old age homes in and around Chennai on a monthly basis.

• Quarterly: - Collection and distribution of old clothes and articles to the poor and the needy. Identifying a slum and conducting a detailed survey of the families living there and distributing clothes and other articles to them. During the last six months over 10,000 people have benefited from this scheme.

• SMILE calls upon the public to give them information about poor & deserving people and philanthropic institutions who require their service and help.
