Medical camp
A total of 2,000 persons were screened at this medical camp. 2,000 others will be provided free medical check-up cards by RIGID Hospitals which will be valid for a period of one year. The screening included a special Hepatitis-B vaccination for 1,000 police personnel and their families. All of them will be given the mandatory second and third doses in November 2003 and March 2004. Tests for diabetes, tubercolosis, ECG and lung spirometry were also conducted. The highlights of these tests are as under :- Total number screened, 2,000: About 25% of the above were suspected to be diabetic and about 28% of them were confirmed to be hyperglycaemic. About 158 diabetics were detected and around eight of them were at a dangerous level of 300–500 mg/d1. About 10% of the population screened were suspected to have lung and breathing problems, of this 30% (60 persons) were found to be suffering from mild chronic obstructive pulmonary disease like asthma and bronchitis. About 8% of the population were screened for ischaemic heart disease and all of them have been invited to RIGID Hospitals for specialist opinion and treatment by Prof J R Sankaran. In all, 960 persons in this two-day period were given the first dose of Hepatitis-B vaccine for prevention of Jaundice caused by this viral infection which has affected around 50 million-plus persons in India, compared to three million persons infected with HIV.
