Cleanliness begins at school

Eminent dermatologist, Dr P K Narayanaswami, has suggested that every school should have a community health nurse to teach children about health and hygiene in a bid to improve sanitation facilities and prevent outbreak of diseases.

Addressing a gathering of principals of over 50 schools in Chennai December 4, at a seminar organised by Parryware of the Murugappa Group to promote clean and hygienic toilets in city schools, Dr Narayanaswami stressed the importance of having good toilet facilities for schoolchildren. Poorly maintained toilets could lead to a lot of diseases, he pointed out.

Good habits have to start at an early age and schoolchildren must be educated on the ill-effects of using an unclean toilet, he said, adding that only a community health nurse in the schools could provide tips and create awareness on subjects like health and hygiene.

Skin diseases could easily spread in the schools. For example, every school asks children to hold hands and sing 'Ringa Ringa' roses. A boil on the hand of one child could easily spread to the others, he pointed out.

Principals and teachers from leading schools participated in the seminar.

G Ramprasad, vice-president, Parryware, said the company aimed at increasing awareness of cleanliness and hygiene in public places. Having talked to the teachers in the first phase, the company would take the programme to the children in an intensive manner in the next phase.

K E Ranganathan, general manager, sales and marketing, Parryware, said the company, "As a socially and responsible corporate and as a pioneer in bathroom products and solutions, we want to take the lead in educating children on good toilet habits."

R Parthasarathy, senior manager, Institutional Sales, Parryware, said over the last one year, Parryware has associated itself with the campaign for clean toilets in public places and public utility services like Railways and temples.
