Q: What is Aerobics
A: It’s a kind of an exercise for everybody, it helps in improving lung capacity, blood circulation, work out stress, and helps keeping fit. It’s a combination of yoga moves, dance moves etc.
Q: How important is this in todays world
A: Today there is a lot of awareness about fitness. Everyone wants to be slim. Especially the women, it is not very unusual to listen to women talking about maintaining their body. Generally people undergo a lot of stress at work, and at home. Aerobics certainly helps in stress release. It helps one to take in lots of oxygen, which in turn improves one's heart rate and lungs capacity. It also helps in burning lots of calories.
Q: Talking about women, in what way does Aerobics help them
A: Only in the last few years, women have started flocking gyms. They have started feeling the importance of strengthening exercise. Today there also exists some misconception about weight loss, especially among women. One has to be very careful about weight loss. It should be done naturally. People always look forward for high impact, (ie) to lose weight faster. High intensity is the one that is required than high impact.(ie) it should be done in a slow, steady and natural way. Aerobics helps in this.
Q: There seems to be not much of awareness about aerobics among the masses. It still seems to be for the elite.
A: I think that’s worng. I do get a good response from the masses. One misconception is that people think it’s a kind of a dance. It is not dance - it is exercise basically. Infact in Banglore, many colleges have aerobics in their syllabus. Chennai, I hope, will follow this soon.
Q:
Exercising in a Gym and performing aerobics, how is it different
A: In Gyms only the cardio exercise is taken care of; there are many other aspects in aerobics. Today many gyms also have aerobics classes.
Q: Do you follow a sequence of exercises in your classes?
A: We start with a warming exercise, followed by a stretch and a cardio exercise. This helps the body to take in lots of oxygen. It also improves the heart rate and burns calories. Then there is a 20 minute conditioning exercise, which targets at specific muscles. We do a combination of everything like kick boxing, yoga moves and dance moves.
General tips for beginners:
-
Participants who want to begin aerobics, or those who are aged over 40 years, should consult their doctor for a heart and lung assessment.
-
Participants who have suffered an injury in the past should have a musculo-skeletal assessment performed by a sports medicine professional before commencing aerobics.
-
Footwear specifically designed for aerobics is recommended. Good fit, stability, secure lacing and good forefoot cushioning are important features of an aerobics shoe.
-
Participants should choose clothing that fits well and has good moisture transfer properties.
-
Sports bras are recommended to improve comfort. Individual fit is very important.
-
Classes should begin at a moderate pace, to allow all participants to warm up adequately.
