Sun related hazards

This is an article pertaining to the occupational hazards of sun exposures helping the readers avoid heat related illnesses, sunburn and skin cancer from the sun's radiation. Get your sunglasses on and lets look at these risks a little closer.

Heat Related Illnesses: There are two kinds of serious heat related illnesses which strike individuals who have been exposed to excessive heat while working. Those who work out doors are at high risk including surveyors and field inspectors, construction workers, maintenance and ground crews. Firefighters and those working in poorly ventilated areas are also at high risk.

"Heat Exhaustion" is the first type and is caused by fluid and salt loss. It is a problem during the summer and especially so during prolonged heat waves. Signs and symptoms of Heat Exhaustion include muscular cramps - usually in the legs and abdomen, weakness or exhaustion, dizziness and even faintness, moist pale skin that may feel normal to cool, and heavy perspiration.

"Heat Stroke" is the second form and is present when the person's temperature-regulating mechanisms fail and the body cannot rid itself of excessive heat. The person's skin will be hot and usually dry with little or no perspiration (this is a key difference between Heat Stroke and Heat Exhaustion). Other signs and symptoms include weakness, loss of consciousness or altered mental status. Heat Stroke usually develops on hot, humid days and is the more dangerous of the two, but both are to be considered serious medical emergencies.

When one is excessively exposed to heat, here are the helpful tips:

Sunburn: Most sunburn involves the outer epidermis layer of skin and is considered "first degree" or "superficial." The burned skin will usually redden and be painful. More severe sunburns are categorized as "second degree" or "partial thickness burns" which involve the dermis or second layer of skin. These burns will redden, blister and produce deep pain. Both are to be avoided by those who work outdoors.

Skin Cancer: As we have seen, overexposure to the sun's radiation can cause heat-related illness and sunburns. Overexposure can also lead to melanoma - a form of skin cancer. Melanoma will usually appear as dark-colored tumors or swelling of the skin. Sometimes a pre-existing mole will get larger or darker. Any unusual spots or growths on the skin should be immediately checked by a doctor to make sure they are not cancerous.

Prevention of Sunburn and Melanoma: The most sensitive areas of the body - the face, forearms and legs - are the parts that normally receive the greatest exposure to the sun. They need to be protected to prevent sunburn and reduce the risk of melanoma.

Provide yourself with effective forms of sun protection such as wide-brim hats and long sleeve clothing. Take the sun-related hazards seriously, and protect yourself.
