Wosulin launched in Chennai
“Worldwide, there are only three manufacturers of recombinant human insulin and Wockhardt has become the fourth company to manufacture and market this product, Wosulin”, Wockhardt president, Domestic Operations, Arvind Vasudeva, said while launching the new product in the southern region today.
He said 'Wosulin' had undergone clinical trials in nine centres in the country. Nearly 350 diabetics were already using this product, he said. The demand for insulin in the Indian market now was to the tune of Rs 250 crore a year and nearly 90 per cent of the insulins sold in the country were derived from slaughtered pigs and cows. “All insulins sold in India today are imported either as finished vials or as concentrates which are converted into vials through third parties.”
“This is a technology breakthrough not only for Wockhardt, but for India,” said Dr Rasendrakumar Jha, senior vice-president, Clinical Research. City's well-known diabetologist, Dr V Mohan, launched the new product here. There are nearly 30 million diabetics in India now and the number was likely go up to 57 million by 2025, he said and appealed for bringing the price of insulin further down.
