New era with Z-100
Now Bausch & lamb has taken this pioneering technology one step further with the introduction of the Z -100 platform, which promises to take vision correction to the next level. This technology ensures faster treatment, which is almost twice as fast than before. It also allows for treatment of potentially more patients including those with hyperopia and mixed astigmatism, he said. The technology incorporates cutting edge features like 'Iris Recognition', which creates a Zy-id - a unique digital map of the iris, individual to eve patient, ensuring that only the correct eye is treated. A 'MultiDimensional Eyetracker' compensates for any inadvertent eye movement by the patient during the procedure, allowing for greater degree of precision for the laser beam, Dr Varman pointed out.
Rajat Goel, Head, Refractive Business, Bausch & Lomb, said another component called Zywave functions as an aberrometer (measuring aberrations), enabling the surgeon to not only look at the surface structural defects of the cornea, but also reveals even the minutest of imperfections that were present throughout the eye that were distorting the light falling on the retina at the back. These aberrations were previously unknown. Now, when the surgeon fires the laser on the cornea, not only does he correct its curvature, he also makes exact corrections on the corneal surface that neutralizes the defects that are present further on in the eye. This means that the light falls accurately on the back of the eye, without the distortion it would normally have had, and the result is the most accurate vision obtained in the history of vision correction so far!! The principle behind Z-100 is that when you bounce back a special wave of light from the retina of the eye, it comes back distorted. The distortion has been caused by the numerous defects that were present in the path of this light in its passage through the eye. When this returning wave of light is captured on a special imaging device, the exact defects in the path of each individual ray of light can be identified. It is this aberration pattern that is fed into the laser, which now sends very accurately targeted beams to make required corrections. The result is the most accurate vision obtained in the history of vision correction so far, Goel said. The benefits of the Z -100 procedure are phenomenal. Better vision (potentially better than 6/6 without spectacles), improved quality of vision and greater safety and efficacy than the conventional laser procedure. Also, with the Z-100 procedure, there is more tissue sparinq than the standard procedure, which is especially important in hiqher degrees of myopia, Goel added. The potential of Z-100 is enormous!! While Z-100 is now the best possible technique to bring back vision to 20/20, a lot of interest has been created across the world around its potential to redefine what we call normal human vision. Since the minute aberrations that are corrected by Z-100 exist in every human eye, even in the eye with 'normal' 20/20 vision, by correcting these natural aberrations, it may become possible to increase vision to even beyond this level. Dr Varman says, much beyond what a human eye has ever seen!! RR
