Accurate neuro surgery with cadaver demo

Prof Tetsuo Kanno, Chairman, Indo-Japanese Cadaveric Skull Base Workshop, has said that accurate neuro surgery like in Western countries is possible only with cadaver demonstration and dissection. He was in Chennai in connection with the Indo-Japanese Cadaveric Workshop conducted at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institue in Porur on February 6th and 7th, 2004.

He had visited Chennai in early 1980s when the then Chief Minister, M G Ramachandran, had to be treated on an emergency. Prof Kanno was largely responsible for the remarkable recovery of MGR and was closely associated with him till his demise. Neuro problems of the late Chief Minister were dealt with in a competent manner under the able guidance of Prof Kanno. Since then he has been visiting India almost every year and is closely associated with developments in the field of Neuro-Science in India.

Faculties have come from Japan, Singapore and Indonesia to train the young neuro surgeons who have not been exposed to this type of workshop. Special cadaveric bodies have been imported from the US for demonstration purpose. These bodies are not available in India because they have been injected with special dyes with colours to differentiate the blood vessels in the brain.

The senior and young neuro surgeons have been specially chosen for this course throughout India to participate in this first-of-its-kind workshop in India.

The Keynote Address was delivered by Prof S Thanickachalam, Vice Chancellor of SRMCRI. He pointed out that the deemed university has been at the forefront regarding technology transfer for optimisation of surgery. This involves a thorough understanding and knowledge of physiology and anatomy, which SRMC has always been striving to provide in an ideal learning environment, he added.

Prof K Selvakumar congratulated the team of Prof Kanno, ably assisted by Dr Yoko Kato and Dr Timothy Lee (Singapore) and Dr Eka (Indonesia), for enabling the conduct of the second Indo-Japanese Cadaveric Skull Base Workshop in India. This will benefit the Indian Neuro Surgeons to develop finer aspects of neuro surgery improving precision and accuracy.

A team of 15 instructors has accompanied Prof Kanno and the two-day workshop will benefit senior neuro surgeons participating in it from Kashmir to Kanyakumari including one from Dubai. The second day of the workshop helped the neuro surgeons to get the most advanced operative techniques with the actual demonstration of cadaver skull base.

The inaugural function of Cadaveric Skull Base Workshop was held at Hotel Trident on 6th February 2004 with the Consul General of Japan, Kikuchi, presiding over the function.

Mementoes were distributed to Prof Kanno and his team by the Consul General of Japan on behalf of SRMC. Commissioner of Customs, Vittal Das, Chennai also participated in the function.
