200th Test tube baby in Erode
 The Sudha Fertility Clinic at Erode, run by Dr S Dhanabagyam, the pioneer in In-Vitro Fertilization (test tube baby), achieved a rare distinction of delivering the 200th test tube baby on 9th April 2004.
This achievement is considered highly significant in a place like Erode where facilities for Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) are minimal compared to any other urban centre in the country.
The first IVF baby was born in Erode in November 1999 and, in a span of five years, the 200th test tube baby has been delivered thanks to Dr Dhanabagyam, who has so far treated more than 4,000 couples for infertility. From the day of the first test tube baby, Dr Dhanabagyam has been actively implementing the latest advancements in the field. ART techniques like IVF and ICSI and micromanipulation techniques like PESA and TESA, were first introduced in Erode District at this
Centre.
Dr Dhanabagyam was born to farmer parents in a village near Erode. Early in her career, she aimed at improving women’s health and to liberate women from the emotional bondage of childlessness. After completing her M.D. in O&G from Kasthurba Medical College, Mangalore, she underwent Infertility training in the National University of Singapore under Prof. A
Bongso.
After completing her course, she started a Satellite Centre, Sudha Hi-Tech IVF Centre, with the help of renowned infertility specialist, Dr Jatin P Shah, Bombay Fertility Clinic & IVF Centre, male infertility specialist, Dr Rupin Shah, and ICSI Embryologist, Sudish Kamath. These experts visit the Centre every month and help in the management of complicated cases and even a few which are not successful in other such
centres.
 The infertile couples from Erode and surrounding districts are now getting advanced treatment in Assisted Reproductive Technology because of the excellent teamwork of Dr Dhanabagyam with a specialist in Mumbai. Erode has entered the ART map of India on account of the excellent results produced so far. The Centre now attracts couples from other States based on positive referrals from those who have already undergone ART with Sudha Hi-Tech IVF Centre. The well-known laparoscopist, Dr Hafeez Rahman, from Kochi, visits the Centre every month to assist the team.
Sudha Hi-Tech IVF Centre has a well-equipped Andrology Laboratory and additional investigations, as and when required, can be carried out for bio-chemical examination of the semen, bacteriological examination, hormone analysis and chromosomal analysis. This helps in counseling the couples as to which method of treatment is best for them.
