Award for Dr Rajkumar
Dr J S Rajkumar, chairman, Rigid Hospitals, and renowned surgeon of Chennai, was presented the Vaidya Ratna Award by the Ved Vyasa Sabha on April 2 at New Delhi.
He was chosen for this award on account of his impressive record of humanitarian service by treating 4,000 plantation workers free of charge and for performing endoscopic surgeries for hundreds of poor in India and Sri Lanka. He has also been organising a free-meal scheme for slum-dwellers twice a week in and around
Rigid Hospitals and offering annual scholarship to needy and meritorious students.
Ved Vyasa Sabha has been giving awards to doctors and other achievers who have consistently excelled in the medical and social arena. Other recipients were Dr Hameed Khan (of the US Genome project, National Institute of Health, Maryland), Dr Ramesh Pandy, chairman, Xechem International, US, and Dr Palep, eminent gynaecologist from
Mumbai.
The awards were handed over by
Sri Jayendra
Saraswati, Sankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, in the presence of a number of dignitaries like Ranganath Mishra (retired Chief Justice, Supreme Court), Venkatasubramanian, CMD Exim Bank, Raghavan, a diplomat, and Modi of the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce (FICCI).
