Rigid Hospital workshop on Hernia
Around 250 medical students, post-graduates and practicing surgeons from Chennai, Pondicherry and Chidambaram will witness the live demonstration at the Breeze Hotel. Dr Rajkumar will be assisted by a team of doctors and seven moderators closely watching the procedures. This will be a practical learning session for the medical students and surgeons as they will be able to apply the procedures once they have acquired the skills through the live demonstration.
Dr Rajkumar will use a tension–free ‘mesh’ prosthetics procedure as compared to the age-old stitch-solution. This can be done using the open technique or the laproscopic approach. In the laproscopic technique, there are two routes of access. One is the Trans – Abdominal Approach (TAPP) and the other is the totally Extraperitineal approach. Rigid Hospital has performed approximately 500 such procedures in the past. Using the laproscope and keyhole incisions to insert the 'mesh' into the right plane and fixing it there are the vital points of this procedure. Hernia is one of the commonest problems in India that requires surgery. Annually in India, over two lakh operations take place. Although hernia operations have been known for the last 100 years, several exciting new hernia surgical procedures have evolved over the last 20 years, and particularly so in the past 5 years. The use of ‘mesh’ prosthetics has revolutionised this operation. Along with the Laproscope, a painful surgery has been converted into a patient-friendly and simple one.
The effort now is "to find new solutions to age-old problems," Dr Rajkumar said adding Rigid Hospitals had achieved a high success rate even with the new techniques. For further information, contact: RR
